If you are on the market for a new car, one of the most important questions you will need to answer is what size vehicle you and your family will need. Even if you decide that a smaller vehicle is the way to go, there is still an endless amount of possibilities, most notably, should you choose a sedan or a hatchback? Sedans have long been the best selling small vehicles on the American market, while hatchbacks are likely site and incredibly popular choice in European markets. Hatchbacks, however, are quickly gaining steam as being a great and super functional alternative in America. So, the question is; how do you choose the best car for you? Hoffman GM helped us out with some great tips, and we are looking to share them with you.
There are some excellent pros standing in the hatchbacks corner. Number one is the increased amount of cargo space. Five-door hatchbacks are exceptionally practical, and offer more space than a four-door sedan; with a hatchback, the backseats can be put down which allows even greater storage space. However, there are downsides to a hatchback and perks to a sedan. A sedan offers your belongings more privacy, given that a hatchback allows a window into the cargo area. The window is more easily broken, and offers less protection than a solid, sedan trunk. And for some sedan loyalists, a hatchback still resembles a station wagon just too much.
As far as price, both sedan and hatchbacks on average cost similar, as long as they have similar capabilities. Where sedan and hatchbacks differ, however, is the resale value and factor may have the potential to sway you to the hatchback side. Most hatchbacks have an exceptional resale value, with the possibility to retain up to 58 percent of their value after three years. Sedans still offer a great resale value, but not quite as great as the hatchback; the industry average for three year retainment values is around 35% for sedans.
Hatchbacks offer as much space and capability as most station wagons, yet they are incredibly stylish and offer a more sleek appearance. They are distinctive as well, and have the ability to stand out among the sea of sedans and SUV’s. A big factor in your decision is your personal style preference, and it might just come down to whether you think a sedan or hatchback is better looking. Ultimately, the decision is up to you and your family, as either choice has great potential.
