What is road rage?

“Road rage” refers to the aggressive and angry behavior that some motorists have towards other road users. Those other road users might be drivers, cyclists and even pedestrians!

Examples of road rage include verbal insults and rude gestures (such as “flipping the bird”). In more extreme cases, road rage can include physical assaults. Some angry motorists might even display dangerous driving behavior, just to “get back” at the other road user.

As you can imagine, road rage can range from mild to extreme aggressive behavior. The sad truth is that all motorists will either witness or experience road rage, some more than others.

Most people believe that the term “road rage” originates from the United States back in the late 1980s.

Examples of road rage

  • Road rage can manifest itself through many different forms. Some of the common forms include:
  • Driving in an aggressive manner, such as tailgating or doing harsh braking;
  • Chasing after other motorists, sometimes for many miles;
  • Verbal and physical abuse;
  • Blocking the road for the purposes of confronting other motorists;
  • Driving into other cars on purpose;
  • Throwing objects at other cars.

In extreme cases, some motorists get injured or killed as a result of other people’s aggressive behavior. A lot of countries recognise that road rage is an increasing problem. They have laws in place to fine or imprison those that threaten other road users.

The news isn’t all bad. There are plenty of ways that you can combat road rage; they are as follows:

Get plenty of sleep

It’s a well-known fact that a lot of road rage incidents can get avoided if the people concerned have plenty of sleep the night before! Lack of sleep can cause you to feel irritable, stressed out and experience headaches.

Make sure you get at least 8 hours sleep each night, so that you feel refreshed in the morning.

Sell your car

You might want to consider giving up driving! It’s an extreme solution to an extreme problem, but it could turn out to the best decision you ever made! These days, it’s easier to sell a car, especially with websites such as Scotland Car Buyer.

Listen to relaxing music

You might like listening to heavy metal music when you’re driving. But did you know that the music you listen to will affect the way you drive? I’m not saying that you need to listen to classical music, for example.

But what you can do is listen to some music that will relax and calm you as you drive. Relaxing music will help those motoring annoyances wash over you!
